The Growing Demand for Copper
Copper has been called "the cornerstone of today's world." It is essential to the transmission of electricity, so it is essential to the technology that powers and supports our modern way of life – computers, electronics, water pipes, air conditioners, medical equipment, hybrid cars, solar power – this list goes on. Copper production in the United States is declining as the existing major copper deposits in the southwest become exhausted, yet the United States continues to demand the products that utilize this strategic metal. This gap between domestic supply and demand has led to a growing dependency on imported copper, while the world's developing economies compete for available copper as their demand continues to increase. These factors, coupled with growing global security concerns, point to the critical need for new sources of domestic copper.
